Our Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

At Shotton Primary School, it is our intent to deliver a high-quality, authentic, culturally broadening and practical modern foreign language curriculum that is aspirational and adapted for all KS2 pupils so as to provide opportunities for children to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish from an authentic source. We feel that it is important to teach children a language that is relevant to them and which they are more likely to be able to use within their experiences outside of school.

Spanish is taught discretely each week in a coherently planned and sequenced set of logical steps in order to develop children’s knowledge, confidence, fluency and skills in listening to, speaking and writing Spanish. There a 3 core elements/curriculum drivers within our MFL curriculum:

1. Language structures
2. Grammar
3. Vocabulary

Whilst we have mixed age classes within KS2, children are taught Spanish within distinct year groups.

At the heart of our Spanish curriculum is the cultivation of a depth of knowledge regarding spoken language. Children are taught to find ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

At Shotton Primary School we see our MFL curriculum as a platform upon which children can learn and develop the transferable employability skills of listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, staying positive, aiming high, leadership and teamwork. It is our belief that the impact of our curriculum equips children with the technical knowledge and depth of experience needed to provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping our pupils to study and work in other countries or at an international level- broadening and expanding their career aspirations.
