Our Art and Design Curriculum
At Shotton Primary School, we aim to embody high levels of creativity and knowledge through the delivery of skill driven and progressive art and design lessons. Our art and design curriculum provides opportunities for all pupils to experiment with, invent and create their own works of art irrespective of ability.
The teaching of art and design covers the programmes of study set out in the National Curriculum. Art and design is taught as a subject in its own right in a coherently planned and sequence of logical steps in order to develop children’s knowledge, confidence, competence vocabulary and skills in art and design.
Children are taught to produce creative work, explore ideas and record their experiences. They are encouraged and inspired to become proficient in a wide range of art, craft and design techniques through:
Children are taught specific subject vocabulary to enable them to analyse and evaluate creative works of identified artists and designers. They investigate great artists and designers to enable them to understand the cultural development of their art forms and use their influence in their own work.
Children are assessed in art and design through observation and product content determining that they know and are remembering more over time. Children are supported and challenged appropriately with all children developing a sense of achievement in their ability and creativity. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 have an individual sketchbook within which they are able to proudly develop a portfolio and record of their work and artistic development over time.
At the end of Key Stage 2 children will have developed a wide range of knowledge and skills and have fostered a love of the arts to enable them to have a level of confidence to continue their learning journey beyond primary school.
Learning today for a successful tomorrow...
At Shotton Primary School we see our art and design curriculum as a platform upon which children can learn and develop the transferable employability skills of listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, staying positive, aiming high, leadership and teamwork alongside an awareness of specific careers within the field of art and design.
