and Nursery School
We are a busy and lively school with lots going on to enrich the experiences of all of our children.
In this section of our website, you can find out about what has been happening in and outside of our school and lots of things that we have planned for the coming weeks.
Mrs Shaw (Head Teacher)
After a busy week, why not join us for a little time out.
On Friday 17th November at 10am in the KS2 Hall, coffee and cake will be served and it would be lovely to see you.
This is a completely free event, but will give you the opportunity to meet Emma Wardell from Durham County Council’s Multiply Project who will be running some parent workshops in school from Monday 20th November.
If you sign up to the free course and complete the three sessions you will be able to claim a £20 Asda voucher – just in time for Christmas!
Come along and find out more, and take some time to enjoy a cup of tea, coffee and a delicious slice of cake.
If your child's birth date falls between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 your child will start Reception at an infant or primary school in September 2024. Why choose Shotton Primary School? Come along and see for yourself at one of our open days:
Wednesday mornings — 27 Sept, 4 Oct, and 11 Oct 2023
All day Fridays — 29 Sept and 6 Oct 2023
To book your visit please contact the school office.
Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent or carer. Bring your children to have a look at our vibrant school and meet some of our friendly staff who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
The following video will give you a feel for some of the daily activities we get up:

On Wednesday 27th September we will be having a coffee afternoon in the KS1 hall from 2:30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and help raise money for a really worthwhile cause…. We would be really grateful for any donations of cakes or biscuits. Please send them either with your child or into the school office on Wednesday morning next week. Our Y6 children will be helping at the event.
The Year 6 Leavers Lunch will be held on Thursday 20 July 2023 which all pupils and staff in school can attend.
The children in Year 6 have chosen their favourite dishes for the main meals on that day:
· Margherita Pizza
· Chicken Curry
· Sandwich or Jacket Potato with a selection of fillings
Please pay for your child(ren)'s meal(s) as normal if your child usually has a school dinner.
If your child normally has a packed lunch and would like a school dinner, please respond to the Operoo Email
Deadline for ordering is Friday 13th July 2023.
Due to the proposed strike this Friday 7th July 2023, the next Movie night will now be held this Thursday the 6th.
The movies will start at 3:20pm sharp and should be finished by 4.40pm, however children can be collected at any time before this, as usual. Children should be collected from the Year 5 / 6 Entrance for Movie Night.
To secure your spot for Movie Night this Thursday, 6th July 2023, please follow the usual process of signing up through our online platform or contacting the school office. As this activity is ran as part of our Out of Hours provision normal childcare costs will apply (popcorn and juice are included in the price) and will need to be paid for when booking. There are a limited number of spaces and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. As per previous strike days, Breakfast Club and Afterschool Club will not run this Wednesday and Friday therefore all bookings for these days have been refunded.
If you have any further queries please contact the office.
Please note, After School Club is only available to children from Reception to Year 6.

The government has made funds available through its Household Support Fund 4 (HSF4) to support families, by offering additional help towards household costs associated with the increased cost of living.
Durham County Council have agreed that households with a child in receipt of Free School Meals, or for nursery children who attract EYPP or the Two-Year old entitlement will receive a voucher payment of £75.
Schools have once again been asked to send out these vouchers.
An email will be sent to eligible families in the coming weeks, which will then be followed by the vouchers. If you do not receive an email and think you may be eligible (eligibility criteria can be found on our website: https://www.shottonprimary.durham.sch.uk/school-meals/ ) then please contact the office who will provide you with the relevant paperwork.
Industrial Action Wednesday 5th July and Friday 7th July
Next week on Wednesday and Friday there are 2 days of planned industrial action by the National Education Union.
The majority of teachers at our school are members of this union. I anticipate therefore that a significant number of classes will be closed to children on Wednesday 5th July and Friday 7th July next week.
We will endeavour to inform you as soon as possible if your child will be able to attend school on the days of industrial action.
However, I will not have final confirmation of this until 8:30am on Wednesday and Friday . It is likely that there will be a small number of children who will be expected to attend school on Wednesday and Friday for a variety of reasons.
Please do not send your child to school unless you are contacted by text and/or email. It is important that you keep a close eye on emails and texts from school so that you know if your child can or cannot attend school on the days of the strikes. All children should attend school on Thursday as normal as this is not a strike day. If your child's class is open on the strike days then your child must attend school.
Myself and every member of staff fully appreciate that industrial action will cause difficulties for many of you. Industrial action within the education sector is certainly not an easy decision for staff at any level to make. Unions are understandably campaigning for any pay rises to be directly funded by Government, this may not always be apparent in the media and the information that is shared by Government with the public. Many thanks for your understanding and support.
Mrs Shaw
We are looking for 2 children to be the official voices of Shotton Primary School...
We are so proud of the polite and well mannered way our children speak. There are times when our lovely staff in the office are not available to answer the phone. We are looking for 2 of our lovely children (Year 2 upwards) to be the pre-recorded voices on our answer phone. The successful candidates will:
Have a friendly, welcoming voice.
Be able to speak clearly with expression.
Be able to follow a script.
Give a really good impression of our school.
Be proud to be part of our school.
Will appreciate what an honour it would be to be chosen as the official voice of Shotton Primary School.
All interested candidates will have their voices recorded in school and the successful children will be chosen via the recorded messages. The best voices will be chosen.
Closing Date: Friday 21st April at 6pm
The following link will take you to the online application form, which must be completed if you wish to be considered.
